Reawakening Your Preferences, Desires and Wants

An important part of this process is finding out, or remembering, what we really desire in our lives—things that perhaps we have lost touch with.

In the “everydayness” of our lives, we tend to focus only on what’s right in front of us, demanding our attention. This usually involves working hard to get what we think we need and worrying about how to keep it.  To further exacerbate things, we live in a world that is constantly pulling our attention toward what’s wrong in life, primarily through news and advertisements.  We are so focused on the frenzied pace of life, we forget about what makes us Feel Good.  It doesn’t occur to us to stop and pet the cute puppy—in fact, we’ve forgotten how much we love cute puppies.

If you add to this our discomfort with wanting and not knowing whether we will receive and the quiet desperation that comes with that, it’s easy to see why many of us have lost touch with our capacity to want.  
 
There are a few standard strategies for dealing with the unsettling aspects of wanting.  Some people live happily inside the confines of their comfort zone, never daring to want anything beyond right where they are.  Others feel fear and push themselves to do it anyway, by working really hard.  

But, if we rely on struggle to get what we want, we limit, from the very beginning, what is possible because we simply cannot keep it up.  Struggle is exhausting!
